Healthcare IT is very different than the services and support that is typically provided to other offices (lawyers, accountants, non-profits, associations, etc). Physician offices are very special in that people are walking around, logging on and off PCs all the time, and using all types of peripherals (scanners, cameras, medical devices) for data input. They see patients every 15 – 20 minutes, which requires the ability to quickly enter and retrieve data. Sometimes voice is used to enter information as opposed to a keyboard. And strict regulatory requirements such as HIPAA dictate high levels of privacy and security in the way the infrastructure is deployed. The result of these factors is that properly deploying IT in a physician's office is much more complex than the standard office installation. We have a contract with the state of Virginia to provide assistance to primary care providers with attaining Stage 1 Meaningful Use in Northern VA.
